The purposes of this study were to deterrnine the effect of different degrees ofseverity of diabetic neuropathy on balance function, and to evaluate dynamic balance andfunctional perforrnance in diabetes patients. Twenty-four subjects with diabetes mellituswere divided into three groups according to results of sensory nerve conduction study. All subjects were evaluated for dynamic balance which was measured usingcomputerized dynamic posturography, and functional perforrnance which was measuredusing the Berg balance scale. One-way analysis of variance was used to deterrninewhether there were any statistically differences of dynamic balance function andfunctional perforrnance among the three groups. The Spearrnan's rank correlation wasused to deterrnine statistical significance between dynamic balance and age. The resultswere as follows: 1. Dynamic balance measured using computerized dynamicposturography was significantly lower in the no response group than in the norrnalamplitude group (p<O.05). 2. Functional perforrnance tested by the Berg balance scalewas not statistically different among the three groups (p>O.05). 3. an inverse relationshipwas found between dynamic balance measured using computerized dynamic posturo-graphy and age (r=-0.68, p<0.05). These results suggest that patients with severediabetic neuropathy have 10ss of dynamic balance function. Therefore, patients withsevere diabetic neuropathy need to have their balance evaluated and recieve appropriateeducation.
