Abstract

This study trace the opportunity of Shin suk-ju’s interest in Japan, who became the premier among Shin family and famous for his good writing, find his and his descendants’ attention for Japan and the influence between them. He treated Japan with manners for the purpose of eradicating Japanese raiders but this was not enough for his kind attitude to Japan, so this study estimated the experience at Seobang temple was his mental motives for it. Superb natural scenery and taoist hermit made him yearned Japan for utopia and showed enough consideration for Japan. His kindness for Japan calm Japanese raiders’ wildness so his tendency became the best prescription for Japanese raiders. He became famous for his policy line and it became Shin family’s glorious tradition. Chosun dynasty had no effective remedy for Japanese raiders’ pillage, so ancestor’s policy line to Japan was their golden rule to Shin’s descendants in Chosun. Shin suk-ju’s grandson Shin yong-gae took a strong stand as hungu but later changed his attitude to moderate opinions. He maybe was under the influence of his grandfather. Another grandson Shin kwang-han followed his grandfather’s moderate policy line to Japan from the beginning and emphasized on kind consideration for Japan. This study found that Shin and his descendants showed moderate policy line to Japan within the scope of Chosun’s national interest. Shin suk-ju thought that Chosun’s peace depended on eradication of Japanese raiders and his descendents followed his policy line. So they were considerate to Japanese raiders not to pillage Chosun because of food shortage. It could be a single track discussion to study how Shin suk-ju’s interest in Japan influenced on his descendents. But it is meaningful that to reveal the real aspect of Shin family’s interest in Japan.
