Abstract
Since ESG management emerged, firm's tax planning has been changing. Rather than pursuing simple tax planning to reduce taxes, managers run their firms with sustainability in mind. This study examine how the results of tax planning affect future earning prediction and firm risk, and how tax planning pursued along with ESG activities affects future earning prediction and firm risk. First, the results of the analysis showed a negative(-) relationship between tax risk and earning predictability, and a positive(+) relationship with firm risk. Second, the negative relationship between tax risk and earning predictability was found to be significantly alleviated in firms active in ESG activities. Additionally, the positive relationship between tax risk and firm risk was found to be significantly alleviated in firms active in ESG activities. The differences and contributions of this study are as follows. First, compared to the studies of Guenther et al.(2017) and Jong-kwon Ko ·Do-young Kim(2021), earnings predictability was presented as a mechanism linking tax risk and firm risk. Second, we differentiated ourselves from previous studies by deriving additional hypotheses by considering ESG activities, a variable that was not considered in previous studies that examined the relationship between tax risk and firm risk. Third, in a situation where new changes to ESG-related taxes are emerging due to COVID-19, we expanded ESG activities into the tax accounting research field and examined the impact on firm risk. It is expected that it will provide useful information to institutions assessing risk, investors, and stakeholders.
