Abstract

This article will, by way of analysing various research articles, show how the Peking Opera, one of China`s ancient dramas, combined with its music, performs narratives. The main focus of this article is to explain how the music, which had been just a sound effect or a facilitator for a drama, became the main channel for the drama narrative in the Qing Dynasty. In the transitional period from the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, there was a critical choice of music which changed drama music from the Qupai system to the Banjiang system. The unique characteristic of Banjiang system is the drum. The drum contributed to an important change of opera. The drama started to emphasize the beat more than the melody. Since then, the Peking Opera has become a perfect performing art which combines narratives with music.
