Abstract
P u r p o s e: To examine the relationship between a bilateral hip fracture with an interval and the amount of osteoporosis as a risk factor along with the other risk factors. Materials and Methods: 19 patients(group A) who had the other hip fracture after having one(ED note: What is one?), were selected. Considering age and gender, two control groups(B, C) who had undergo a BMD test were chosen. group B included those with one hip fracture c group C included those withno hip fracture. The mean age in group A was 73(57~98) years old and the male: female ratio was 7:12. The fracture in groups A and B resulted from minor trauma. This study examined the relationship between a hip fracture and osteoporosis, and collected some data related to muscle weakness. Results: The mean interval from the 1st hip fracture to the 2nd was 28.2(1.3~69)months. The mean BMD score and the fracture threshold in group A was 0.32 g/cm2, 0.42 g/cm2. In group B, the mean BMD score and the fracture threshold was 0.38 g/cm2, 0.51 g/cm2. Some BMD results in group C were below the fracture threshold of groups A and B. The BMD score in groups A and B was similar. There was a significant difference between group C with group A and B(P<0.001). and no difference between group A and B in terms of the underlying disease, the inhospital period and the time to ambulation after osurgery, and the functional estimation(P>0.05). C o n c l u s i o n: Osteoporosis is a defintive risk factor but this study could not identify other risk factors for an opposite hip fracture after a fracture in one hip. Further study is needed to identify any other risk factors.
