과학 영재 교육의 일환으로 이루어지고 있는 과학 영재 캠프가 과학 영재 학생들이 진로를 선택하는 과정에 어떻게 영향을 주는지에 대해서 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2001~2003년도에 KAIST 사이버 과학 영재 캠프에 참여했었던 학생들을 대상으로 설문하여 회수된 41명의 학생들의 설문 및 에세이를 분석하였고, 면담을 실시하였다. 이 연구는 학생들이 대학에 들어간 후인, 2005년에 수행되어졌다. 먼저, 이 학생들이 과학 영재 캠프를 통해서 진로를 선택하는 데 영향을 받았는지의 여부를 조사하고 영향을 주는 요인을 캠프 프로그램, 캠프에 같이 참가한 동료들, 캠프 조교들, 그리고 프로그램 장소 등의 요인별로 나누어 분석하였다. 41명 중 34명이 과학 영재 캠프를 통해서 진로 선택에 영향을 받았다고 하였고, 이 학생들은 과학 영재 캠프의 여러 요인들을 통해 이공계 진로를 확고히 하거나 세부 전공을 결정한 것으로 분석되었다. 과학 영재 캠프에 참여한 학생들은 과학 영재 캠프 동료들이 같은 진로를 희망하고 있는 것 때문에 이공계 진로에 긍정적인 영향을 받았고, 이공계 진로를 확고히 한 것으로 드러났다. 과학 영재 프로그램을 통해 과학 영재들이 이공계 진로에 계속해서 긍정적인 영향을 받도록 하기 위해서는 같은 진로를 희망하는 동료들과의 상호 연결망을 형성해 주는 것이 중요하다는 점을 시사한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors from science gifted camp which influence the career choice of gifted science students. For this study, 41 students, who had participated in the KAIST Cyber Science Gifted Camp in 2001-2003, were surveyed. They were requested to write an essay and then interviewed. The study was conducted in 2005 when the students were attending university. Students were questioned on how the science gifted camp affected their career choice; in particular, the factors of camp programs, camp peers, camp assistants, and camp environment. Of the 41 students surveyed, 34 students claimed that the science gifted camp did indeed affect their career choice. In fact, the camp was determining reason why several of these students decided to enter science or engineering. Other students decided upon their specific major because of several factors of the science gifted camp. The most important factor affecting their decision to choose science or engineering was camp peers because they held the same career hope. This study showed that it is important that gifted science students make a network of peers who have the same career hope to positively effect science and engineering career choice.
