Abstract
The purpose of the study was to explore the differential functioning of Korean boys and girls in OECD/PISA scientific literacy items. In general, gender differences are often reported at the test level or based on group mean scores; however, a better approach would be to examine the performance of boys and girls on whole ability scales at item level. This study adapted a multi-group item response theory model to analyze OECD/PISA science data at item level for Korean students. The result showed that 11 items functioned differently between genders at the same ability level. Girls at higher ability levels performed better than boys at the same ability levels. Number of items in which boys out-performed girls decreased to 12 ability items instead of the 31 items reported as using total group mean. This study indicated the need for more specific research on ability level and group membership rather than on total index within group membership.
