Abstract
This study aimed to explore the direction of science education that can address the relationship between media and science by reviewing the literatures on media, science communication, and media literacy. To be specific, this study attempted to identify the concept of science media literacy and educational model for science media literacy. As a result of reviews on media literacy, we found that the ability to use media for accessing quality information, critical understanding and evaluation, social communication and action, and healthy enjoyment of media are commonly emphasized in previous literatures. In particular, critical understanding is a key element of media literacy. And researches of science communication shows that while the ability to simply interpret and acquire science-related information based on the deficit model was emphasized in the traditional media environment, the ability to actively enjoy and participate in science culture has been emphasized due to the change in the digital media environment that allows interactive communication, and the ability to critically understand and evaluate misinformation and disinformation has been emphasized in recent years. And previous studies on science media literacy emphasized that the ability to critically evaluate the credibility of science-related information based on a understanding of the life-cycle of science-related information. Based on the results, we defined science media literacy as “the ability to critically interpret science-related information in the media, effectively access and utilize the media to engage in quality scientific communication, and ultimately enjoy and participate in science culture.” Proposed a conceptual model of science media literacy consisted critical understanding and evaluation, access, scientific communication, and science culture enjoyment. We addressed that science media literacy is not just the ability to judge the truth or falsity of information, but also the ability to respond critically to socio-scientific issues, participate democratically, and ultimately develop a scientific culture and transform society.
