Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore how students responded to changes in a science teacher’s epistemological messages during small-group scientific modeling lessons. A case study was conducted with one novice science teacher and two focal small groups. Seven lessons that included small-group scientific modeling activities were video-recorded, transcribed, and qualitatively analyzed. The analysis involved inductively identifying the teacher‘s epistemological messages and categorizing students’ responses according to whether they aligned with these messages. The analysis revealed a notable shift in the teacher’s epistemological messages from emphasizing individual reasoning to promoting social reasoning across the unit, a transition shaped by the teacher’s collaboration with the researchers over several months and evolving experiences in the modeling lessons. In the middle of the unit, both focal groups showed message-aligned responses centered on individual reasoning; however, their responses diverged markedly toward the end of the unit. More specifically, one focal group aligned with the shifted messages by engaging in collaborative model evaluation, whereas the other showed limited interaction and quick, authority-based acceptance of a single model. This divergence was influenced by interaction patterns among the members, students’ epistemological framing, and the small-group leaders’ responses. These findings imply that effective epistemological support must address teachers’ actions and the complex influence of small-group dynamics and students’ framing.
