Abstract
This study explored the configurational relationships among the conditions influencing preservice elementary teachers’ scientific reasoning competence using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Scientific reasoning, as a core component of scientific literacy, encompasses not only logical thinking but also metacognition, understanding of the nature of science (NOS), and analytic–holistic thinking. Participants were 87 preservice teachers enrolled in an elementary science teaching methods course at a national teacher education university in Korea. Data were collected using standardized instruments measuring logical thinking (TOLT), metacognitive awareness (MAI), understanding of the nature of science (SUSSI), analytic–holistic thinking (AHS), and scientific reasoning competence (SRC). The fsQCA results revealed two major configurations leading to high scientific reasoning competence. The first configuration combined high logical thinking, high metacognition, and high analytic thinking with low understanding of the nature of science. The second configuration consisted of low logical thinking and low metacognition but high understanding of the nature of science and high holistic thinking. These findings suggest that scientific reasoning competence cannot be explained by a single cognitive ability but rather emerges through multiple co-occurring configurations of conditions. Some preservice teachers achieved high reasoning competence through structured and self-regulated cognitive processes, while others did so through contextual and integrative understanding of scientific knowledge. This study highlights the need for inquiry-based learning that integrates logical–metacognitive and NOS–holistic approaches in teacher education programs and provides implications for diagnostic assessment and personalized feedback in science teacher preparation.
