Abstract
Background Heart rate variability (HRV) is a non-invasive marker of autonomic nervous dysfunction and is being used in myocardial infarction, hypertension, and diabetic neuropathy. Also an association between elevated resting heart rate and risk of development of hypertension or cardiovascular disease is frequently reported. WBC count is a marker of inflammation and is a risk factor of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. In this study, we investigated the associations of these markers. Methods The study population comprised of 223 adults who aged 40 years old or more. HRV was measured with SA-2000E for 5 minutes. We categorized WBC count by its tertile values, and evaluated variables with chi square test and one way ANOVA. The correlations between WBC count and continuous variables were evaluated by Pearson and partial correlation coefficient. Statistically significant variables were examined in multivariate linear regression with WBC count as dependent variable. Results There was a statistically significant difference in sex, smoking, body mass index (BMI), HDL cholesterol, triglycerides among 3 groups of WBC count. The partial correlation coefficient after controlling age was significant for systolic blood pressure, BMI, HDL cholesterol and mean heart rate, but not for HRV indices. In multivariate linear regression analysis, mean heart rate was statistically significant in all age groups, but SDNN was significant in age group of 50 years or more Conclusions It is suggested that meanheart rate could be used as marker of inflammation which is a risk factor of atherosclerosis, but more study is required.
