Abstract
The DDS (Data Distribution Service) protocol is a middleware used in IoT environments such as robotics, autonomous vehicles, and smart factories, where real-time communication, reliability, and scalability are required. The DDS Security standard provides authentication, access control, and cryptographic plugins to secure DDS communication. However, several vulnerabilities have been identified in the design of these plugin specifications. Recent studies report that DDS Security's symmetric cryptographic scheme(AES-GCM-GMAC) lacks freshness verification, enabling replay attacks. This paper proposes a lightweight anti-replay scheme to address this vulnerability. The scheme binds essential metadata to the AAD(Additional authenticated data) of AEAD and applies HMAC-based stateless tokens within the DDS Security architecture. Through informal security analysis, we prove the security against replay attacks and present a computation and communication efficiency evaluation to demonstrate that the proposed scheme is suitable for DDS environments.
