Abstract

The dark web is a space where illegal transactions and cyber criminal activities occur frequently, and research on automated data collection for cyber threat intelligence (CTI) has been actively conducted. The dark web’s specialized access structure and various security mechanisms hinder the operation of data crawling systems, and in particular, CAPTCHA serves as a major obstacle for systems that rely on automation. This study investigates the feasibility of automating the CAPTCHA-solving process by evaluating CNN-based character recognition models. Using CAPTCHA images collected directly from real dark web services, a training and test dataset was constructed through a minimal preprocessing procedure. Five models based on ResNet and VGGNet were implemented, and their character recognition performance was evaluated to experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of automated CAPTCHA solving in dark web environments. The findings suggest that the development of a CAPTCHA solver can enable efficient real-time monitoring of the dark web without manual intervention by investigators, thereby contributing to high-quality CTI acquisition and enhanced cybercrime investigation capabilities.
