Abstract
This paper aims to implement a character decipherer for Korean letters, using deep learning technology. Specifically, a method was used which teaches the characteristics of the ‘shape of letters’ to computers. However, because data is limited by time constraints and human ability, only a part of Chusa’s Korean letters was converted into a database, to prove its feasibility and utility. The study utilized convolutional neural networks (CNN) techniques, which are mainly used for image recognition in deep learning. Several data generation and augmentation techniques were also used to compensate for insufficient data. The produced model showed the correct answer rate of the top 1-88.72%, in addition to the top 5-97.63% for the test data. Based on this model, a character decipherer analyzes individual character images. It then calculates possible characters and outputs the value showing the highest probability. In order to illustrate this method and verify its utility, we applied the decipherer to Chusa’s Korean letter 11. Basic performance was confirmed by applying it to areas where there was no disagreement during the decipherment. Furthermore, the decipherer was able to identify small differences and present possible alternatives. We also confirmed that, when we applied the method to areas of decipherment disagreement, it presented a significant basis for judgment. Because the decipherer is able to calculate the probability value by considering the character itself, this method can likely be used as objective evidence.
