Abstract

Power analysis attacks are a type of side-channel attack in which an attacker analyzes the power consumption patterns of cryptographic devices to extract sensitive information, such as secret keys. Early detection of these vulnerabilities at the source-code level is essential. This paper presents a software-based framework that employs embedded CPU emulation to identify side-channel vulnerabilities in cryptographic libraries without requiring physical hardware. Leveraging a state-of-the-art embedded CPU emulator, the framework virtualizes cryptographic function inputs, outputs, and random number generation to simulate various attack scenarios. By collecting instruction-level execution logs and analyzing them through visualization and statistical methods, the framework automatically detects side-channel leakages in implementations of cryptographic algorithms. Experimental evaluations conducted on three AES algorithm implementations demonstrate the framework's effectiveness in the early detection of side-channel vulnerabilities during the source-code development stage and in assessing the effectiveness of implemented countermeasures.
