Abstract
The study was performed to investigate the effects of 8-weeks elastic band exercise training and how detraining influences on walking related fitness and gait ability in first-ever stroke patients. The subjects of this study were over 60 years old 16 patients with first-ever stroke who participated in elastic band exercise training program. The subjects were randomly assigned into two groups, training group(n=8) and control group(n=8). The walking related fitness and gait ability variables were measured baseline, after 8-week of elastic band exercise training, and after 4-week of detraining. The result obtained in the present study were as follows. There was statistically significant enhancement in BMI, grip strength, Romberg test with open eye, isokinetic strength of knee in affected extremities of training group. This exercise effect was continued after 4-week of detraining on walking related fitness variables such as balance ability(Roberg test with open eye) and isokinetic strength of knee. It was found that the elastic band exercise has positive effect on body composition and fitness in first-ever stroke patients as well and the effect was maintained over 4-week of detraining on balance and isokinetic strength of knee. It was concluded that the 4-week elastic resistance exercise training elicited the enhancement of the physical fitness for walking ability.
