Abstract
Stroke is the second leading cause of death, and third leading cause of disability conditions. In the present study, functional isokinetic strength ratios of the quadriceps and hamstrings (H/Q ratio) as well as peak torque per bodyweight and conventional H/Q ratio in individuals with chronic poststroke hemiparesiswere investigated. Individuals with chronic poststroke hemiparesis (over 36 months after stroke) and non-stroke people (n=9, in each group) were included in the study. Individuals with chronic poststroke hemiparesis showed significantly lower peak torque per bodyweight than that of non-stroke people in the intact and affected sides. In conventional H/Q ratio, individuals with chronic poststroke hemiparesis showed significantly lower ratio in the affected side. In functional H/Q, moreover, there was no statistical difference between individuals with chronic poststroke hemiparesis and non-stroke people. Base on the results of the present study, it can be suggested that the increase of knee muscle strength in the intact side and the improvement of cooperation between hamstring and quadriceps in the affected side are needed in functional rehabilitation in individuals with chronic poststroke hemiparesis.
