Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a 12-week combined aerobic and resistance exercise program on physical fitness and depression in patients with schizophrenia. Twenty-eight male patients with schizophrenia were randomly assigned into two groups; combined exercise group (CEG, n=14) and the control group (COG, n=14). The exercise program consisted of group walking and Thera-Band resistance exercises in 60-min sessions, three times a week for a 12-week period. Physical fitness consist of grip, leg strengths, power, flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness. A secondary condition was self-reported symptoms of depression, assessed with the Beck depression inventory. The significant level was P<0.05. After 12 weeks, the CEG group was significantly in strength (Grip and Leg). Also Beck Depression Inventory was significantly in the CEG group. But, power, flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, there were no significant by combine exercise. Therefore, This research shows that strength (Grip and Leg) and depression symptoms of the combined exercise group improved significantly in 12 weeks due to the exercises. Combined exercises should beincluded in rehabilitation in order to improve physical capacity and depression symptoms.
