허우샤오셴(侯孝賢)의 영화 자객 섭은낭(2015)은 시각적 미니멀리즘과 정제된 미학으로 비평적 찬사를 받은 반면, 불투명한 서사 구조와 절제된 전개로 인해 다양한 해석과 해독의 난점을 동반해 왔다. 본 연구는 이 영화를 전통적 협(俠) 윤리를 도덕적 저항의 한 형태로 재정립하고, 이를 현대 영화의 미학과 윤리적 딜레마 속에 통합한 작품으로 해석한다. 특히 주인공이 체제가 부여한 자객(刺客)에서 윤리적 자율성을 지닌 협객(俠客)으로 전환하는 과정을 중심으로, 세 차례 암살 시도와 마지막 은거가 ‘기-승-전-결’이라는 서사적 구성과 ‘정-반-합-지양’이라는 변증법적 구조 속에 배열되어 있음을 고찰한다. 이는 주인공 섭은낭(聶隱娘)이 맹목적 복종에서 윤리적 성찰을 수행하는 주체로 이행하는 과정과 맞물린다. 나아가 정의, 윤리, 폭력이라는 주제가 제국 권력의 이데올로기적 틀 밖에서 어떻게 재구성되는 지를 분석함으로써, 이 영화가 중앙집권적 권위에 저항하는 개인 윤리의 서사를 형성하고 있음을 밝힌다.
Abstract
Hou Hsiao-hsien’s The Assassin (2015) has received critical acclaim for its visual minimalism and aesthetic refinement, while its opaque narrative structure and restrained development have invited a wide range of interpretations, often accompanied by ambiguity. This study interprets the film as a work that reestablishes the traditional ethos of xia (俠, knight-errantry) as a form of moral resistance, and intricately integrates this ethos into the aesthetic and ethical dilemmas of contemporary cinema. Focusing on the film’s narrative structure, the paper examines the protagonist’s transformation from a state-assigned ci ke (刺客, assassin) to a morally autonomous xia ke (俠客, knight-errant), and analyzes how the three assassination attempts and final withdrawal are arranged in a dialectical sequence of thesis, antithesis, synthesis, and sublation (aufheben) within the narrative framework of exposition, development, climax, and resolution. This structural composition reflects the protagonist Nie Yinniang’s transition from blind obedience to an ethically reflective subject. Furthermore, the study explores how the film reconfigures the themes of justice, ethics, and violence outside the ideological framework of imperial authority, ultimately proposing a narrative of individual ethics in resistance to centralized power.
