Abstract

Structural deformation of posture induced by spinal cord injury primarily reduces the range of motion of the thoracic spine and causes hyperkyphosis. Hyperkyphosis may indirectly cause a decrease in lung function including respiratory function, chronic neck/thoracic pain, and an increase in depression. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a postural stabilization exercise program on thoracic spine range of motion, respiratory function, chronic neck/thoracic pain, and depression in order to improve problems resulted from structural deformities related to the posture of people with spinal cord injury. To collect data, 21 adults with spinal cord injury were recruited through convenience sampling. They were randomly assigned to an experimental group of 12 people and a control group of 9 people, respectively. The postural stabilization exercise program was conducted twice a week, 75 minutes per session, for a total of 8 weeks. Linear mixed modeling showed that there was a main effect of time (Δpost-pre: 20.96°, p=.003) and an interaction effect of time and group (p=.03) in thoracic spine range of motion. However, there were no statistically significant changes in respiratory function, pain, and depression. The potential reason would be that the intervention failed to consider various anatomical aspects and focused only on movements in the sagittal plane. Additionally, the absence of aerobic intervention is considered a study limitation. In conclusion, 8 weeks of postural stabilization exercise is expected to improve the range of motion of the thoracic spine in people with spinal cord disability. However, in order to have a significant effect on the respiratory function, pain, and depression, several anatomical aspects must be considered and a multicomponent exercise program, including aerobic intervention, should be planned and implemented.
