Abstract

This study aimed to systematically review dance intervention programs conducted for people with developmental disabilities in South Korea, analyzing their structural components and implementation characteristics to suggest practical directions for future program development. For this purpose, a systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, focusing on peer-reviewed domestic studies published between January 2000 and March 2025. To ensure methodological rigor and reliability, two researchers independently extracted and cross-checked the data. A total of 39 peer-reviewed studies published between January 2000 and March 2025 were selected and categorized based on intervention type, participant characteristics, duration, dependent variables, measurement tools, and influencing factors on intervention outcomes. Results of this study indicated that most interventions targeted children and adolescents, with a primary focus on affective domains such as self-esteem, self-efficacy, and interpersonal relationships. Dance therapy was the most commonly applied intervention type, and key facilitating factors for effective outcomes included social interactions, physical environments, and instructional strategies. However, approaches encompassing the full life span, including both people with and without disabilities, promoting physical activity levels, and emphasizing skill-based learning remain relatively underexplored in the existing literature. Based on these findings, future dance interventions should be expanded to accommodate diverse age groups, promote inclusive environments, and integrate the physical health benefits and structured skill acquisition inherent to dance. These directions are essential for the development of more comprehensive and sustainable intervention programs for people with developmental disabilities.
