Abstract
This study aims to research the intuitive qualities and basic knowledge required of adapted physical education instructors. The researcher conducted this study based on his experience teaching physical education to people with disabilities at S University in Seoul and in the field of sports for people with disabilities from 1991 to 2001, his 24 years of experience teaching college students with disabilities at H University in Gyeonggi Province from 2002 to the present, and a review of the literature. The results of the study are as follows. The intuitive qualities required of adapted physical education instructors include the ability to intuitively identify types of disabilities, assess the severity of disabilities, observe individuals with disabilities, diagnose physical movements, demonstrate empathy and communication skills, and respond flexibly to situations. Additionally, the basic knowledge required of adapted physical education instructors includes an understanding of the identity of adapted physical education, an understanding of types and degrees of disabilities, knowledge of diagnosis and evaluation for physical activities for people with disabilities, theories of motor development and motor learning, teaching strategies and application abilities, and behavioral management abilities. Based on these research results, it is believed that this study will serve as a reference and provide assistance in teaching physical activities to people with disabilities, both for those who wish to teach physical activities to people with disabilities without a certification and for those who have recently obtained a adapted physical education instructor certification.
