Abstract
The term waishengren, literally people from other provinces, refers to the people who moved from mainland China to Taiwan around 1949 with Guomindang led by Jiang Jieshi. Servicepersons and their family among those mainlanders lived in residential areas called juancun. The second-generation juancuners experience serious identity crisis between mainland China and Taiwan. Zhu Tianxin, a productive writer since the 1970s whose place of origin is the Shandong province, is an example. In her short story, My Friend Alisa included in a collection called Thinking of my Juancuner Brothers, Zhu Tianxin treats the issues of identity by relating them to sexual identity. The male protagonist, who grew up in a military culture in juancun, loses his masculinity and develops aspects of femininity. The story of this process is connected in an inseparable adhesion to a travel back to reality from the world of myth that transcends both time and space. The narrator of the story and the protagonist Alisa cannot follow blindly the life of modern society dominated by consumer culture, nor can they be confined to the world of permanent myth dreamed by the generation of their parents. That is the confusion experienced by the writer as a second-generation juancuner, and My Friend Alisa is vivid portrayal of it.
