Abstract

Zhong Li He is one of the pioneers of Taiwanese literature. This paper intends to study Zong Li He's work from an East Asian perspective. Zhong Li He had stayed in Manchuria from the late 1930s to the early 1940s. The Imperialist Japan established the Manchuria after the September-18 accident. Manchuria was a colony and a land of tragedy for poor immigrants, but it was a land of opportunity for adventurers and a land of freedom for revolutionaries. Manchuria was a space of hybrid mixture at that time. Few Taiwanese writers worked in Mainland China, and fewer writers had interests in Korea. In this sense Zhong Li He is a very important writer for Korean researchers. The primary works this paper focuses on are Zhong Li He's three novels, An Escape, City Twilight, and Under the Shadow of the Willows. In An Escape, Zhong Li He represents the situation that he and his fiancee have escaped to Manchuria for marriage. In City twilight and Under the Shadow of the Willows the Taiwanese hero ‘I’ has sympathy with a poor Korean who couldn't get married with his lover. In these novels the Taiwanese hero remains as an onlooker who simply shows sympathy to the Koreans placed in a tragic circumstance. Where does the sense of distance between ‘I’ and ‘they’(the Koreans) derive from? Is it a result of another ‘discrimination’ among different people of colony? Or does it signify the limit of Zhong Li He's class consciousness? Despite the feelings of sympathy the Korean and the Taiwanese have for one another, why cannot hope and solidarity be found among them? Not a few discourses based on moral necessity have been circulated. But it's not easy to approach East Asia as a community. It's because the historical and political contexts of each country are complicatedly intertwined. This would be one of the dilemmas that confront the East Asia discourse.
