Abstract
This paper aims to examine the cultural characteristics and meanings of civil culture and new civil class in Shanghai in the era of globalization, with special reference to the problem of formation and transformation of urban culture in East Asia. In this paper, I tried to configurate the dynamics of sociocultural fields of the region processed by the upsurge of the middle class, so-called new civil class. Particularly, I suggested a concept of civil culture in analyzing the advent of the new civil class in Shanghai. The concept, I argued, can be a clue not only to find out the process of combining the traditional components with the modernization but also to explain the concept of civil culture which has both the dependence on the government and the independence from it. In addition, I inquired into the possibility of Shanghai civil identity or civil culture to investigate the urban dynamics of Shanghai city as a global city more deeply in relation with the formation and transformation of urban culture in Shanghai since 1980s. Firstly, I point out that it is difficult to define whether there is civil culture in Shanghai with special reference to the problem of Shanghai urban culture or identity. But there is a possibility of cohesion between an imagination of urban culture and a civil culture in Shanghai with relation to the growth of civil movement because Shanghai has had autonomy from the national government increasingly. The cultural resources of Shanghai to construct new identities of new civil class will warrant the creation of new urban culture in Shanghai in the near future.
