Abstract

There are many disputes over whether Director Zhang Yimou's Knight-errant movies are successful. They made a commercial success, but are being widely criticized for its inappropriate political arguments or for its loose plot and shoddiness. This study has made, apart from preexistent disputes, on a new and fatal tries Zhang had in his two films Heros, Lovers. From my perspective, Zhang is nearly the only who correctly understand the nature and mechanism of Knight-errant movies. He got the point of the nature that Trues and Lies, the Imaginative and the Real are constantly mixed and replaced each other, and represented his Knight-errant movies by using that mechanism. But his tries is very fatal to Knight-errant movies because they make audiences awake to recognize that the scenes they are watching now are not real and have been not existed. It disappointed the audience by breaking their willingly believes, and led to a result that they lose an opportunity to take genre pleasure of Knight-errant movies. Zhang dared to have very brilliant and fatal tries in his films that no one had before since he had no understood or understood it too fatal to try.
