Li Jinhui is a Chinese musician who is well known as the first composer of modern Chinese popular song ― Shidaiqu(時代曲). Shidaiqu started in late 1920s, and developeds in Shanghai through 30s and 40s. It is a mixture of Chinese traditional folk song and American jazz, and had a great influence on the history of Chinese popular music. But shidaiqu has always been very controversial musical genre. Elite musicians and leftist musicians both condemned its vulgarness and commercialism, while it was welcomes by the mass listeners. This article focuses on the various aspects of Li Jinhui. He is not only a popular music composer, but also a editor of elementary school text book of Chinese national language. He also was devoted to children music education and revolutionary music. A close examination of Li Jinhui's various aspects will lead to a improved recognition on his musical achivement and cultural environment in metropolis Shanghai.
