Abstract

On the one hand, because of economic situations driving corporate restructuring and early retirement, on the other hand, social and cultural changes like increasing costs for private education and provision of one's old age caused considerable changes on interest toward wealth amassment among Korean adults. What are the attitudes toward wealth amassment, and how attitudes toward wealth amassment affect evaluation and purchase of financial institutions? This study was to unfold the types of attitudes toward wealth amassment and differences in bank usage and attitudes by types of wealth amassment attitude. Using one-on-one depth interviews pilot study was conducted to probe wealth amassment attitudes and main study of nationwide survey was followed based on stratified sampling of 1, 200 interviewees aged 19-59. On 22 attitudes, factor analysis was applied and five factors were extracted. And cluster analysis was conducted to get six clusters and validity test revealed that 92% of total cases were stably classified. Six clusters were named as ‘Unplanned consumption', ‘Passive money management', ‘Active money management', ‘Stable and safe saving preference', ‘Saving for overspending', and ‘Mixture of saving and overspending'. There were significant differences in bank usage and attitudes by clusters. Attitudes - ‘credibility on customer information', ‘preference on benefit', ‘stability from overseas capital investment', ‘use convenience', 'better financial products, and ‘size of bank' were significantly different by clusters. And among criteria on choosing specific banks, 'better financial products' and 'stability from overseas capital investment' were significantly different by clusters. Analysis on attitudes toward financial management and provision of one's old age by clusters were added. Attitudes toward financial management were significantly different by clusters. However no significant difference was found on provision of one's old age. Theoretical and practical implications and limitations were discussed.
