Abstract

We have often observed a market phenomenon that the demand for a commodity rather increases even when its price rises, which is an exception breaking the law of demand. Such exception cannot be explained well by the traditional purchasing mechanism because of the assumption of independence between the consumer’s willingness to pay(WTP) and the market price. Many studies have been made to explain the exceptions theoretically by relaxing such an assumption of the independence. However, they are still incomplete because they can neither explain the asymmetry of exceptions that we hardly observe the decrease in demand with the decrease in price while sometimes observing the increase in demand with the increase in price, nor characterize the commodities vulnerable to such an exception. This study gives an empirical evidence proving that the asymmetry of the exception actually exists and the uncertainty of expected utility is a crucial reason of the exception by using the anchored purchasing mechanism and the contingent valuation method. And it also tries to show that the exception would like to happen to a new product consumers are not sure how much utility they can get from consuming because of uncertainty. The evidence will support the high- pricing strategy of a firm planning to release a very new product.
