Abstract
When there is a limited information provided, consumers could use a product’s name as a heuristic cue to evaluate the product. In order to test the impact of product naming on consumers’ attitude formation, this study investigated the integrative effects of diagnosticity and metaphor of a product name on consumers’ product evaluation through two web based experiments. Using sentence-form product names, experiment one showed that consumers prefer less metaphoric names to highly metaphoric ones when their diagnosticity is high given limited information situation. On the other hand, consumers prefer highly metaphoric names to less metaphoric ones when their diagnosticity is low. Experiment two tested the moderation effect of brand recognition on the relationship between product name and attitude formation. Specifically, consumers prefer highly diagnostic and less metaphoric names under high brand recognition condition while they prefer less diagnositic and highly metaphoric names under low brand recognition condition. These results contribute to the literature in that the impact of a product’s name on consumer attitude was empirically tested. Also this study suggests implications on how to enhance product naming strategies.
