Abstract
This study focused on reestablishing compulsive hoarding behavior and identifying the relationship between compulsive hoarding behavior and consumer responses and defining roles of reward type and hoarding pattern. The results of the research can be summarized as follows. In the first phase, qualitative research was conducted to derive the main concepts of compulsive hoarding behavior. Through qualitative validation, it was confirmed that compulsive hoarding behavior consisted of 3 factors, namely, disposal dissonance, emotional attachment, and pursuit of acquisition, and 20 items. By validating the reliability and validity of the measurement items, we confirmed that compulsive hoarding behavior consists of 3 factors and 11 items. In the second phase, we observed the influence of compulsive hoarding behavior on consumer responses and confirmed the moderating effects of reward type as a mitigation method of compulsive hoarding behavior and hoarding pattern in the behavioral dimension. As a result, The verification of Hypothesis 1 confirmed that consumers with high compulsive hoarding showed lower altruistic disposal and higher compulsive buying compared to consumers with low compulsive hoarding. The verification of Hypothesis 2 showed that in the case of consumers with high compulsive hoarding, gaining social reward from disposing possessions led to higher altruistic disposal and lower compulsive buying compared to when personal reward was to be gained. In the case of consumers with low compulsive hoarding, there was no difference in responses according to the reward type. The verification of Hypothesis 3 showed that in the case of consumers with high compulsive hoarding, higher selective hoarding behavior resulted in lower altruistic disposal and higher compulsive buying. In the case of consumers with low compulsive hoarding, there was no difference in responses according to the hoarding pattern. Based on these results, the study provided valuable theoretical and managerial implications and directions for future research.
