Abstract
Life cycle stages are important factors to affect families’ financial behaviors including spending, saving, and accumulating assets. Financial objectives and the priority of those objectives would be different according to the families’ life cycle stages. Therefore, in financial planning, families’ life cycle stages are very important factors to consider. In addition, propensity to save, defined as a ratio of saving to income, is one of the important index that measure households’ financial health. Also, the propensity to save of the households would be the first step for a household to achieve its financial goals. In this regards, the purpose of this study was to examine financial behaviors and structures of the households in different lifecycle stages and to examine the factors related to propensity to save of households in different life cycle stages. Specifically, 1) this study examined the income and expenditure streams over the life cycle, debts and assets, saving patterns and the amount of saving for each saving tool over the life cycle, and examined the propensity to save over the life cycle. 2) This study investigated factors related to the propensity to save in each life cycle stage. Much research related to life cycle has used the life cycle income hypothesis as a theoretical framework. Although the life cycle income hypothesis has provided useful insight to explain households’ saving behaviors, it has been challenged due to some of its assumptions when the theory applied to the real life. Thus, this study applied behavioral life cycle hypothesis as a theoretical framework instead of applying the traditional life cycle hypothesis, and focused on life cycle stages in real life.
