Abstract
While considerable past research has examined the positive aspects of fairness for more than half a century, relatively less attention has been paid to the negative aspects of fairness. Also, the effects of fairness on cognition and behavior have mostly been viewed from the perspective of individuals with lower perceived social status, resulting in the lack of consideration of those with higher perceived social status. In the current research, we conduct two experiments to examine whether fairness beliefs can have different impacts on consumer behavior depending on the level of perceived social status. Our findings indicate that individuals with higher perceived social status are more likely than those with lower perceived social status to make more hedonic choices when issues related to societal fairness are made salient compared to the control group condition (Experiment 1). Our findings also show that the effect of perceived social status and fairness beliefs on hedonic choices among individuals with higher perceived social status is mediated by self-regulation capability (Experiment 2). Theoretical and practical implications of our findings are discussed.
