Abstract

The external influence others enact upon consumers is a key point to analyze when considering consumer shopping behaviors. However, in online commerce where there is no direct person-to- person interaction, customer produced information such as product reviews, comments and questions play a large role influencing consumer choices. Marketers can also influence consumers by using the power of social pressure. This is done by displaying the consumer’s purchasing history or previous item views, or by linking their online activity to social networks such as Facebook. The existence and actions of other people online can further influence the consumption behaviors of individual consumer by raising awareness of sales and products. The social commerce industry has been steadily growing since 2010, recently reaching 4 billion USD. Yet, though the industry is expanding, research on the field of social commerce remains limited. The majority of studies on social commerce focused on the price benefits or scarcity of products, and research on the relationship between sellers and consumers is largely focused on the growing dissatisfaction of the consumers. In contrast, there has yet to be any research done on the effects of purchasing/shopping behaviors of others on personal consumption. Thus, this study aimed to understand the role of other consumers on the decision-making process within the social commerce context. We explored the effects of social clues by displaying the visual profiles and number of purchases by others. To analyze the influence of social clues on other variables, eight scenarios were crafted. The three variables were discount (high vs. low), visual profiles from other consumers (exposure vs. no exposure), and number of other consumers (high vs. low). Subjects of the eight combination groups were asked to answer a survey. When the study was controlled for discount rate, the results confirmed the effects of two types of social clues, visual profiles and the number of other consumers, on social presence, consumer competition, and purchase intention. The direct effect of both social clues on purchase intention was also more thoroughly examined. All variables were reinforced by referring to and modifying previous research and the items were measured using a 7-point Likert scale. The online surveys targeted women in their 20s and 30s with experience using both social commerce web-sites and Facebook. A total of 443 samples were collected and were analyzed using factor analysis, reliability analysis, t-tests, analysis of variance and bootstrap tests through the SPSS 20.0 package. The bootstrap test revealed that the two kinds of social clues were influential on purchase intention through some different aspects, primarily through the pressure of social presence and consumer competition. When visual profiles were used, they were found to increase purchase intention by increasing social presence and consumer competition in sequential manner. Similarly, showing the number of other consumers who had purchased the same product increased purchase intention by causing the subjects to feel social presence and competition both in sequential and in two independent way. Subjects reported feeling a sense of rivalry to have the best products, and thus purchased items more aggressively. This study investigated the different role played by two types of social influences. The findings from this research suggest that marketers can construct visual clues related to tother consumers in the online environment; this is an effective tool to increase social pressure and motivate greater purchase intention. Consumer competition is also inspired by statistical information immediately and plays a large role in the consumption mentality. The online commerce industry must continuously innovate to expand, and one way to do so is to use social clues on the web-sites to increase profits. Marketers must aware of the interface available for interaction with other customers by considering the impact of social suggestion.
