Abstract

The purpose of this study was to suggest ways to effectively improve the consumers' consumption life throughout the entire life cycle (family life cycle) based on Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) methodology. In this study, the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) methodology is used to derive a priority for efficient improvement of the consumption life based on the family life cycle stages. Consumption life was composed of consumer's consumption category. This study analyzed the perceived importance (important consumption categories which were chosen by consumers using partial ranking method) and satisfaction of consumers in each consumption category. In addition, using Importance-Performance Analysis(IPA) methodology, priorities for improving the consumption life based on each family life cycle stage were derived. For this purpose, this study was based on the theories about consumption life, family life cycle, and Importance-Performance Analysis(IPA) methodology. This study conducted chi-square analysis and analysis of variance(ANOVA) using data from the Korea Consumer Agency's “2015 Consumption Life Indicators in Korea”. The IPA methodology was used to derive priorities for improving the consumption life based on the stages of the family life cycle. According to the family life cycle, there is a difference in the importance and satisfaction of the consumption categories. The following consumption categories should be first concentrated in order to improve consumers' consumption life: housing and financial services in single people and married couples with no children; housing, financial services and clothing in married couples with children below elementary school age; housing and educational services in married couples with children below high-school age; housing in married couples with dependent children; housing and financial services in married couples with independent children; and housing in the retired. In this study, consumption categories were classified as clothing, food, housing, medical services, educational services, financial services, telecommunication services, transportation․vehicle services, congratulatory․condolence support services, beauty․health services, and culture․leisure services. Family life cycle stages were classified as single people, married couples with no children, married couples with children below elementary school age, married couples with children below high-school age, married couples with dependent children, married couples with independent children, and the retired. Perceived importance based on family life cycle stages significantly differ in consumption categories such as clothing, food, housing, medical services, educational services, telecommunication services, congratulatory․condolence support services, beauty․health services, and transportation․vehicle services. Perceived satisfaction based on family life cycle stages significantly differ in consumption categories such as clothing, housing, medical services, educational services, transportation․vehicle services, financial services, congratulatory․condolence support services, and food. Food and housing were found to be important in all stages of family life cycle, and the following consumption categories have salient meaning for specific family life cycle stage: clothing and culture․leisure service in the single people, medical service and financial service in the married couples with no children; educational service and clothing in the married couples with under elementary school children; educational services and medical service in the married couples with below high-school children; medical service and culture․leisure service in the married couples with dependent children; medical service, transportation․vehicle service, and congratulation․condole support service in the married couples with independent children; medical service, health service, telecommunication service in the retired. In order to improve the consumers’ consumption life efficiently, it is necessary for marketers and policy-makers to provide customized strategies or implementation of policies, informational services, and educational support.
