Abstract

As viral marketing grows, marketing seeding strategies are emerging. Thus, previous studies investigated the seeding objects who have strong social influence based on individual’s network characteristic and insisted that hubs who have many network connections, generally have higher social influence than others. However, due to the rapid growth in viral marketing costs for hubs, the efficiency of the strategy has been issued. In order to propose an efficient hub seeding strategy, this study investigated the interaction between the group's network density and hub’s social influence. To examine the interaction, the authors collected data including consumers’ purchase records and their online community information from the online music social network website called “last.fm” and analyzed it. According to the analysis results, in general community, the hubs have higher social influence than others, but in the community with high network density, the social influence of the hub was reduced. This study proposed an efficient seeding strategy for practitioners, with the results that the influence of hubs depends on groups’ network density.
