Abstract

People tend to form impressions when they see the faces of others. These impressions are often likened to animals, with the most common comparisons being “dog-like” and “cat-like” faces. However, research on the specific impressions conveyed by these “dog-like” and “cat-like” faces has been limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of “dog-like” and “cat-like” eye shape on impressions and further examine how the perceived suitability between model characteristics and brand personality influences consumer attitudes in advertising contexts. To achieve this, perceptions of age, attractiveness, dominance, and competence, which are personality factors related to eye shape (dog-like vs. cat-like eyes), were evaluated. The analysis revealed that cat-like eye shape were perceived as younger, more attractive, and higher in dominance and competence. Additionally, the study designed a 2 (model's eye shape: dog-like vs. cat-like) × 2 (target age group message type of brand: 20s vs. 40s) × 2 (physical attractiveness: high vs. low) between-participants design to investigate the impact of the match between model characteristics and brand personality on advertising attitudes and purchase intentions. The results showed significant interaction effects between the model's eye shape and the target age group message type of the brand on both advertising attitudes and purchase intentions. Furthermore, a moderated mediation analysis revealed that the model's eye shape indirectly influenced advertising attitudes and purchase intentions through brand dominance, with physical attractiveness moderating this indirect effect. Specifically, when the model's physical attractiveness was low, cat-like faces positively influenced advertising attitudes and purchase intentions through brand dominance. However, the moderated mediation effect of brand competence was not significant. This study contributes academically by confirming the influence of eye shape, which has been relatively underexplored, and validating the impact of the match between model and brand personality on consumers in advertising contexts. Practically, based on these results, beauty industry practitioners can implement differentiated marketing strategies by selecting models according to brand personality.
