Abstract

This study examines consumer perceptions of EVs(Electric Vehicles) by analyzing online community posts about 2 years from the date of the Carbon Neutral Declaration of Korea (October 28, 2020) using the structural topic model(STM) to understand consumer perceptions of EVs(Electric Vehicles) from multiple perspectives. The STM results uncovered 19 topics including new topics such as ‘Driving Feeling and Sound’, ‘Consumer Needs for Small EVs’. Second, there were 7 positive, 8 negative, and 4 neutral topics, implying consumers have ambivalent responses toward EVs. Third, the 19 topics were categorized into 6 clusters including ‘EVs Battery Issue’, ‘Discussion on the paradigm shift in the automobile industry’, ‘EVs Charging Issue’, ‘Consumer Interest in Innovation Products’, ‘Economic costs and benefits, ‘Explore and compare alternatives’ and the topic correlation analysis identified relation pattern among factors. Lastly, the analysis of the interaction effect of time and positive-negative response confirmed longitudinal changes in consumer responses to each topic. Overall, consumers' positive responses increased due to innovative factors like low noise and acceleration, however negative responses also increased for subsidy policies and EVs accidents, suggesting improvements remain to be made. This study has academic implications recognizing consumer perceptions of EVs beyond the existing theoretical frameworks and also has practical implications for automakers and the government.
