Abstract

This study investigates how real-world disease threats influence users’ environmental preferences within virtual environments such as the metaverse, through the lens of the Behavioral Immune System (BIS). A 2×2 between-subjects experiment was conducted manipulating disease threat (present vs. absent) and crowd density in the metaverse (high vs. low). Participants (N=185) interacted with a custom-built metaverse environment using avatars. Results revealed a significant interaction between disease threat and crowd density on metaverse preference. Specifically, under disease threat conditions, participants significantly preferred low-crowded virtual environments over crowded ones, indicating that the behavioral immune system may be activated even in virtual contexts. The findings highlight the importance of dynamic environment design that reflects users’ psychological states and real-world contexts. This study provides both practical and theoretical implications for UX design, healthcare applications, and brand communication strategies. By employing an ecologically valid virtual simulation, it also uncovers the psychological mechanisms by which disease threat and social density jointly shape user experience in digital environments.
