Abstract

This study aims to criticize the existing researches that evaluate Lu Xun's contribution to the process of the modernization of the Chinese Language as “Wholesale Westernization” and emphasize the importance of the traditional vocabulary that was used by Lu Xun and the related traditional way of thought. It is true that the major content of the modernization of the Chinese Language proposed by Lu Xun was the creation of a new type of the Chinese Language by reconstructing the traditional Chinese language using Western languages as a model. But if Lu Xun is evaluated by his proposal only, without the intention behind such proposal, it is a two dimensional opinion. Lu Xun's assertion about the modernization of the Chinese language may have been a strategy to achieve his real goal, not the goal itself. Actually, Lu Xun himself used numerous traditional vocabulary and phrases. Some vocabulary is related to his view of the world (truth) and revolution. In other words, while Lu Xun superficially insisted on the modernization of the Chinese language with the model of Western language, he was still inheriting the traditional language and the traditional way of thought in his own products and thinking. This study makes a close examination of Lu Xun's Co-existential pattern of thinking and his ideas on the modernization of the Chinese language with the real examples of the usage of “Cheng(誠)” and “Er(而)” by Lu Xun.
