‘Mainland imagination’ and Cross-Strait Marriage in Taiwan: Analysis on the Mainland Bride’s Citizenship

This paper aims to analyze the cross-strait marriage permitted between China and Taiwan from 1987 when martial law was abolished in Taiwan. Cross-strait marriage appeared as a new type of women's migration toward taiwan in a situation that they had underwent the rapid economic growth during the 1960-70's. By now, mainland bride, a spouse of taiwan male, the ratio of them reached almost 70% among foreign brides, quite bigger than that of Southeast countries. Their legal rights, however, were seriously restricted comparing with the brides from other countries. Hence, this paper tried to reveal the cause and trace it's process of discrimination on the grounds of ethnic, gender, especially on the ‘province origin(省籍)’. The recognition of ‘province origin’ aroused from early 90's under the slogan ―the vindication of independence of Taiwan― strongly influenced the discrimination against mainland bride in Taiwan. The provision is specified in the ordinance 《taiwan and mainland cross-strait peoples relation ordinance》. Through the inspection of the ordinance, this paper drew up the context of discrimination against the mainland bride.
