초록
The term 'zhutixing' has gained a strong connotation of sovereignty through its wide use in the discourse on Taiwan literature. And what they were witnessing in the 1990s may very well be a reconstitution of Taiwan's dominant culture, in which formerly alternative or oppositional formations had been actively incorporated. The right or power of interpretation, within nativist discourse, is nothing but a logical extension of 'zhutixing' that Taiwan literature has secured for itself through efforts of 'zizhuxing' and 'bentuhua'. By this point, we see how these key concepts are interlocked and yet mobile. They lead to and build on one another and form a persuasive rhetorical system that reinforces itself. Faced with a diverse field that has attracted some of the sharpest minds in contemporary Taiwan, it would be audacious for any observer to assume that he or she has something new to offer. And I would like to offer two rather inconclusive points as a way of closing my discussion. First, on the level of meta-commentary, the discourse developed on Taiwan literature should be viewed and studied as an important component of the continuing Chinese project of modernity, both negatively and positively. Second, the ambiguity of the concept of Taiwan literature is the reason for its intellectual potency and viability. Taiwan literature will help shore up a much richer, more interactive, and more in-depth cultural geography than has ever been made possible, as far as modern Chinese history or literary thought is concerned.
