This is a comparative study on two novels: Han Han’s Triple Door and Zhang Jinghong’s City of Motels. Between these two novels, we can find many similarities: main characters are very alike, their contempt and distrust toward the educational system is explicit, parents and teachers are either indifferent or incompetent, etc.. One can easily regard these novels as “bildungsroman” or “initiation story,” but I suggest the term of “young adult novel” is more proper category, as the modern theme of education and socialization, which were substantial in “bildungsroman,” are not essential in these two “young adult novel.” By comparing and analysing these novels, I tried to explain how ‘young adult novel’ in mainland China and Taiwan have been developing throughout the Cold War and post Cold war era.
Abstract
