Abstract

This study investigated the trends and meaning of the film market in mainland China by focusing on the social context of popular and mass communication, focusing on Chinese popular films in the top 10 in BoxOffice from 2017 to 2019. The Chinese film industry, which grew remarkably in the 2010s thanks to the Chinese government’s film policy that began in earnest after joining the WTO, reached its peak growth from 2017 to 2019 before the Pendemic and its market size expanded to the second largest in the world. During this period, Chinese films in particular dominated the top 10, achieving unprecedented box office profits. Most of these films have a strong sence of ‘Main Melody’ but unlike before, they are also commercially successful. Along with the film’s technical and narrative perfection, the most notable factor is the change in the feature of the ‘Main Melody’. During this period, ‘Main Melody’ confronts the public’s desire for a rapidly changing perception of reality with specific implications for contemporary issues and presents interpretations and solutions. This means that the government power at the time desperately needed a public education mechanism and utilized ideotainment to create a successful model. However, it is doubtful whether this success model will continue to be effective. Movies during this period had strong genre characteristics, and box office elements such as genre fusion and special visual effects were greatly improved. In this regard, the tectonic shift in genre is also a key feature. Military action genres, science fiction genres, and comedies with strong ‘Main Melody’ characteristics are emerging, and animation is also leaping to a higher rank. Dramas are roughly divided into two types: the government-directed type, which has a strong ‘Main Melody’, and the general type, which contains mixed messages. Animation and dramas show a high artistic level while covering the most diverse social issues of this period.
