Abstract
This paper will introduce the recent Legal Reform Discussion in Korea and make some suggestions for inter-Asian collaboration among East Asian law schools. Recently, Korea decided to introduce a 3 year graduate Law School system in terms of judicial reform which pursues an ideal of the legal profession in a broader term—lawyers should have legal knowledge, as well as experiences in other social fields. This reform aims to provide lawyers who possess the abilities and qualifications to deal with the upcoming globalization and to offer easy access to legal services for the public in general. And the introduction of new law school system will help collaboration with Chinese or Japanese Universities to fulfill the goal of globalization. The discussions in Korea about establishing a Law School are focused on setting up the new educational system following the examples of the US Law Schools. However, after the study, US Law Schools and upcoming Korean Law Schools have essential difference in their goals and functions. It is obvious that educating lawyers in general terms is the effective way to achieve collaborative goals of East Asian Countries. However the concept of lawyers seems impossible to be changed from one day to another because it belongs to Korean Tradition that the notion of Lawyers contains only judges, prosecutors and practicing attorneys. This difference would influence the content of Law Schools. Nevertheless Korean Law Schools should not neglect their duty to collaborate with its neighbor countries, China and Japan.
