This paper aims to look into the newly emerging medical interpreting market in Korea to investigate how the players in the market react to the government’s initiative. It further analyses, in turn, their needs and demands to see how these players will affect the new and current interpreting markets. As part of the research review on medical interpreting, the paper studies advanced medical interpreting markets in the United States and Australia where medical interpreting has been practiced for over 30 years, focusing on the markets' contexts and systems in order to define medical interpreting. Based on the definition, the needs and expectations of the users of medical interpreting services in Korea are investigated through a questionnaire survey and interviews to see how they are similar or different from other cases in an attempt to identify the unique nature of medical interpreting in Korea. The results of the study will contribute to the development of medical interpreting by providing critical market information to those involved in the field.
