초록
South Korea is experiencing one of the world’s fastest population aging transitions, with projections indicating that the elderly population will continue to rise. Concurrently, thyroid cancer (TC) has become the most prevalent endocrine malignancy in Korea, with an increasing incidence, especially among older adults. This review examines the challenges and strategies in the surgical management of elderly patients with TC. The aging population and advancements in diagnostic imaging have led to a rise in TC diagnoses, often detected incidentally in older adults. While surgery remains the standard treatment, decisions must consider age-related factors, comorbidities, functional status, and quality of life. It highlights the need for individualized, multifactorial treatment approaches to optimize outcomes. This review aims to provide data for better management strategies and future guidelines, particularly in Korea, where the elderly population is growing rapidly.
