Abstract

Standardizing phonetic value of Chinese characters are a common task for the countries in East Asian cultural sphere. The Chinese characters listed in 'Unicode CJK EXT_B' are 42,711 characters. Among them, 17,211 characters were chosen as the standard phonetic value in "A study on standard phonetic value of the international standard code CJK Ext_B." so, it is needed to establish the standard phonetic value for 25,500 characters which is 59.7 percent of the total. In addition, the Chinese characters submitted by South Korea as CJK EXT_B are 166 characters, among these, the phonetic values in "A study on standard phonetic value of the international standard code CJK Ext_B." is 39 characters, and the phonetic value and semantic values in the "Unicode Chinese Character search engine", provided by the Institute of Korean Studies at Korea University, is 40 characters. However, there are some differences in the content of these two studies. In the "Unicode Chinese Character search engine", five characters that were not included in the "A study on standard phonetic value of the international standard code CJK Ext_B." are added, and phonetic value of four characters that were included in the "A study on standard phonetic value of the international standard code CJK Ext_B." is omitted. As a result of putting these two data together, only 44 characters are compiled in. In other words, despite the data submitted by South Korea, phonetic value and semantic value on 122 characters, or four-thirds of them, remain missing. Given the total number of characters registered in EXT_B, the amount of characters submitted by South Korea is very small. Nevertheless, much of the phonetic value and semantic value of characters is missing. The characters contained in EXT_B are supported by "글", so it is urgent to establish the phonetic value and semantic value of Sino-Korean characters.
