Abstract
This paper investigates phonological development in the production of English consonant clusters made by Korean children longitudinally. The data were collected from 18 children three times over the period of 3 years. The major findings are: 1) The data provide additional evidence for the privileged status of onset: Acquisition order for consonant clusters is CC onset > CCC onset > CC coda > CCC coda. 2) Regarding simplification strategies, feature change is favored over insertion or deletion in onset, while deletion is more favored in coda. 3) In relation to the acquisition order of individual onset clusters, s-clusters and voiceless consonant plus sonorant clusters are the easiest among all the clusters. This study provides evidence for the influence of markedness that is not available immediately by looking at the first language only. This longitudinal study also sheds light on developmental processes in acquisition.
