초록
This paper aims to explore phonological phenomenon in Chamorro, in terms of Government Theory (Kaye, Lowenstamm and Vergnaud 1985, 1990, henceforth KLV). Chamorro vowel fronting, of which the process converts [u, o, a] to [i, e, æ] in the first syllable of the root if a front vowel precedes, is widespread among the classical examples for vowel harmony in languages. This paper investigates the phenomenon of Chamorro vowel fronting in Government approach, in which it is proposed that syllables are bound together based on government relations. Noting some problems which arise in Government Theory, I propose to analyze the phenomenon of Chamorro vowel fronting in Extended Government Phonology (Park 1996; Park and Michaels 1997), which extends lexical representations in the Government framework along the lines of the Markedness Theory in the Syllable Structure approach.
